Buyers Tips

Health Clubs

Health Club Tips:

* Check with your doctor before beginning a fitness program.

* Contact your local BBB, consumer protection office, or state attorney general's office to see if complaints have been filed against the health club and to find out if there are state laws regulating health club memberships.

* Know what you want to get out of the health club membership, as different health clubs serve different demographics.

* Ask for a one or two day trial membership or a month-to-month membership to avoid a long-term obligation.

* Verify what the membership includes: personal training, towels, fitness classes, lockers, etc.

* Verify the costs for amenities not covered under the membership.

* Ask how many members belong to the club? A club without membership limits could be extremely crowded during peak hours.

* Verify the club's hours of operation and restrictions. Spas often limit men's/women's use days and lower-cost memberships may have restricted work out hours.

* Verify the qualifications of class instructors and personal trainers.

Questions to Ask Before Signing the Contract:

* What are the start and end dates of the contract?

* Is there a cooling off period? (A number of days that allows the consumer to reconsider after signing the contract.)

* What is the health club's cancellation policy?

* Is there a cancellation fee?

* What is the cancellation notification period?

* If you are injured can you get a refund on your health club contract?

* Is the health club membership affordable?

* What are the club's policies if one is re-locating?

Signing a health club contract should not be taken lightly, as with any contract there can be penalties for breeching that contract. If one were to be in the market for a vehicle you would research it, test drive it, and then make your buying decision. Similar actions should be taken regarding a health club contract.
